Chapter 9

Death comes closer

I awoke late, and alone. I lay remembering the night, and listening to Jenny moving about in the kitchen. With a wave of pleasure, I realised that there was none of the distaste with which I had woken on other mornings of the few brief affairs I had experienced, nor was there a trace of the repugnance I had felt towards my partner. I threw back the bedclothes and sat up. Jenny came in, fresh and lovely, from the shower. She sat down beside me and kissed me briefly, then jumped up. "Well," she demanded, "is there a way to tell?"

"To tell what?" I asked, then remembered our conversation of the previous evening. "Yes." I smiled, getting up off the bed. "I never thought of that way."

She laughed happily, and took my hand. "Come on. We're expecting a call from Inspector Crist remember?"

And that brought me back to earth with a little thrill of fear, for I began to realise just how much I had to lose now. I set the radio beside me as we had breakfast, and its buzz came with the cornflakes. I picked it up and answered. Crist's voice came through.

"Good morning. They tell me you had a couple of visitors last night, and they confined their attention to your car."

"No, but we know who they are." He sounded pleased with himself. "Actually, we sneaked in and had a look."

"What? I didn't hear you."

"No, well perhaps you were sleeping better."

I felt myself flushing as I remembered the activity of the night. At times we had been pretty noisy. "What do we do now?" I asked.

"Well, you can't come to town in the car. We would have to search it, and then we would have to arrest you. They could relax then, knowing they could get at you in jail. They would only have to threaten your parents or someone you cared for. We've fixed the car so that it won't run--it's got plugs guaranteed never to spark again. You can go out, and try to get it going. Let them see you. There's a bus goes past the turnoff at a little after ten--catch that. When they see you haven't taken the car, they might just have another go at the house. We're going to withdraw our men to follow you. All except one that is."

"All right," I said. "We'll be on the bus."

I finished breakfast, and went outside to the car. As predicted, it refused to start. I pushed it back down the slight slope out of the carport, and opened the bonnet. I played around with it for about half an hour, then slammed down the bonnet and went inside. I showered quickly and got dressed. We left, and, by walking briskly, we covered the three or four miles to
